Chemical Bonding

There are two main types of chemical bonding...

 IONIC
&

COVALENT

Chemical Bonding - the combining of atoms of elements to form new substances

Electrons are arranged in different energy levels. The number of energy levels depends on the element. There is a fixed amount of electrons in each energy level.

First Level

There are 2 maximum electrons in the first energy level.

Second Level

There are 8 maximum electrons in the second energy level.

Third Level

There are 18 maximum electrons in the third energy level.

Fourth Level

There are 32 maximum electrons in the fourth energy level.

After the fourth level, the maximum electrons decrease backwards. The fifth level can contain up to 18 electrons, the sixth level can contain up to 8 electrons, and the seventh level can contain up to 2 electrons.

The electrons in the outermost energy level are called valence electrons. If the outermost energy level contains its maxium amount of electrons, the atom will not bond with anything.
