About Sarasota High School Army Junior ROTC
The SHS JROTC program is a four year citizenship program students can participate in to achieve credits for graduation and to instill in cadets the leadership values of citizenship, service, personal responsibility, discipline and a sense of accomplishment. SHS Army Junior ROTC began in 1969 and is one of 250 Junior ROTC programs under the 6th Brigade Eastern Region, U.S. Army Cadet Command, Fort Monroe, Virginia. SHS AJROTC serves 208 students under the block schedule model (104 per semester). The program is based on military structure comprised of companies headed by students with ranks of Cadet Captain (c/CPT), Executive Officer (XO) and First Sargeant (c/1SG). Students also fulfill job roles such as Battalion Commander, Squad Leaders, Personnel Officer, Logistics Officer, etc. Retired military personnel who are also certified JROTC Instructor(s) and who possess Florida State Teaching Certification fulfill the role of teachers, mentors and program director.
